Dear New Teacher

First of all, congratulations! Whether you are brand new to the game or experienced but going into a new school or same school but a new subject or same school, same classes but new promotion. There is a little bit of newness for all of us, but some experience more newness than others.

The new school year, 2024, is about to start for all of us whether we are ready for it or not. It was bound to happen. We saw it coming. I guess I just want to extend some love and strength to you all (including myself). May we have every capability to be able to serve out whatever our purpose is for this year.

This coming week, teachers will open first, and then the learners will eventually join on Wednesday. I hope that it goes well for all of us, no matter what the administration/management has planned.

We have an idea of how we would like this year (or at least just the first term) to proceed, but we know that our plans don’t always match with the education department’s plans, don’t always match with the school’s plans or even parents’ and learner’s plans, not even the universe’s/God’ plans.

Life happens, and plans change. At times, we need to be strong, flexible, and agile enough to just go with it. As long as you’ve got your intentions in place, you are at least moving in the right direction

We all know that being a teacher is a calling. We also know that sometimes it feels like a million jobs in one. However, in no way is it an act of superhumanism. You can do anything, but it doesn’t mean you should do everything. Take care of yourself first and seek the help and support that you need.

For brand new teachers, fresh out of BEd and PGCE, who are looking for an awesome and supportive community of professional teachers, have a look at the Jakes Gerwel Fellowship’s Professional Teachers Community:

Because, options are always a good thing and communities of practice for teachers are very beneficial. I recently came across Teachers CAN multiplier programme:

I’ve recently become a Jakes Gerwel Fellow Alumni, and without a doubt, I would say that JGF is the way to go for NQTs. I felt completely supprted and nurtured to be the educationalist that I am. This year, by grace, I hope to be a part of Teachers CAN Fellowship, which I’ve known about for a long time and heard great things about, but a minimum of 2 years teaching experience required. However, this multiplier programme is also sounding great.

2024, I’ve been hearing that it is the year we soar 🦅. Let us do that together to the best of our abilities. Let us remain in our can-do spirit.

I wish us the very best and all our teacher-heart’s desires. Stay true to your values as they hopefully align with the school’s values and ethos. Fight the right battles with your learners and your mental health at the center of it. Lastly, slay every day or at least most days, on days that you don’t, your teacher bestie got you :).

Have an amazing 2024 academic teaching year!
